Emergency services worker Derek Griffin celebrated his retirement by cutting a cake shaped like an ambulance.

Mr Griffin, 64, of Plantation Road, Chippenham, has worked in the accident and emergency service in the town for 34 years and said farewell at a buffet lunch at Ladyfield Church, for 80 friends and colleagues.

As the middle brother of five, Mr Griffin is not the first of his family to have worked for the emergency services.

His younger brothers Kenneth and Anthony worked as a fireman and a policeman, and they have have both retired ahead of him.

Mr Griffin said: “It seemed like a good idea at the time – my brother was in the fire service so I thought we might make a set of it.

“I got to know all the crews really well and I appreciate all the support and comradeship I’ve had from the Wiltshire medical service.”

Mr Griffin’s legacy will continue as his son works as a duty manager in the emergency control room at Devizes.
