A scheme to help clubs benefit from the heightened interest in sport since the Olympics was launched in Wiltshire last week.

On Your Marks, Get Set, Go! was launched by Paralympic silver medal winner Aaron Moores at his former swimming club in Trowbridge Castle Place Leisure Centre last Thursday.

The scheme offers sports clubs help in training new coaches and gaining funding, to ensure promising athletes and sports stars are able to develop their talents.

Jerry Kunkler, Pewsey councillor and Wiltshire Council cabinet member for leisure, said: “This has been a fantastic year for sport in our country, and here in Wiltshire we want to keep that spirit alive by ensuring people can access the very best sporting and coaching facilities.

“We recognise the invaluable work of local sports clubs in delivering participation opportunities within our communities.

“It’s important to remember that much of this work is done by proactive volunteers.

“We want to support them to ensure they are in a healthy position to cope with increased demand.”

The scheme was set up by Wiltshire Council as one of its Olympic legacy projects, with support from Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership. For details, visit www.wiltshire.gov.uk/sportsdevelopment, or call Alex Muse on (01380) 724911.
