Chicken protester is given a battering

A teenage animal welfare activist protested outside KFC in Trowbridge for seven hours on Saturday, dressed as a giant chicken.

Olly Tyler, 16, of West-wood, was protesting at what he believes are the poor conditions factory hens are kept in.

He used the £600 custom-made suit to attract attention, holding a placard and handing out flyers. Olly, a volunteer for Oxfam, said: “It was good, but it was long; seven hours stood in the same place.

“I had a lot of people beeping their horns and smiling, but I did get two chicken thighs thrown at me and a bottle of water, which wasn’t great.

“People still went in KFC, but lots of people saw my sign, which was good.

“A few people came up to me. Somebody gave me an umbrella and somebody gave me a massive chocolate bar and a drink. McDonald’s offered me a free meal, which I couldn’t accept.”

On the whole, the former John of Gaunt pupil thought his protest was a success and is now considering another protest around the Christmas period.

A KFC spokesman said: “At KFC, we are committed to poultry welfare and we use only reputable suppliers, that are the same as the UK’s leading supermarkets and restaurants, which meet or exceed UK and EU regulations on quality and welfare. “We regularly audit their performance, to ensure standards are consistently met, and last year we became the first quick service restaurant to gain Red Tractor certification. This means that all our Original Recipe chicken on the bone is sourced from Red Tractor certified British suppliers.” Although originally planning to to protest on Sunday as well, Olly felt unwell, so was unable to appear.

Perhaps Olly should buy dog costume and stand in front of the Kebab House in Castle St.

Search it on YouTube, you'll find all the proof you need. I've never eaten KFC because of the horrific abuse their chickens suffer. And @Trelawney just because he won't eat at KFC doesnt necessarily mean he doesn't eat meat. I love chicken but I make sure it's free range, not battery farmed like KFCs is, which is why he was protesting.

I'd lik to than the lad for opening my eyes to what goes on at KFC. On that particular day I was feeling a bit peckish and wondering what to eat when I heard there was a giant chicken outside KFC. I went up there to have a look and while I was there I tried a bargain bucket... delicious! Shall definitely be going there again. Thanks Olly.

In seriousness, fair play to the lad for sticking up for his opinons and getting out there! It's nice to see someone following through, although maybe a little naively?

Anyway, it's hard to type with these wings, I've donned my smartest Pigeon costume and am off to protest outside "Best Favourite Chicken".

Anything which is bred to grow quickly in certain conditions isnt going to have the best life. You dont need the internet or youtube, just a bit of nouse. Clearly the people who read this paper are as dense the people who write it.

I assume you've included yourself in that sweeping generalisation?

Shouldn't that be 'watch my fingers'? My mouth had nothing to do with it.

"Oh this is fun" -- apparently you read this paper therefore you must be dense --QED.

Early in the thread 'oh this is fun' addressed 2 posters as imbeciles (plural) and in the same sentence suggested that they should maybe educate yourself. Later in the thread an accusation was made that all readers and writers of the WT were dense and should have a bit of nouse (presumably the nous bit as there is no e in the word), then made a highly imbecilic comment to Mrs D.
Wouldn't normally do the grammar police bit, but some deserve it.
