A tourist map of Devizes which is littered with spelling mistakes is still on display more than two years after they were pointed out.

The map's errors were featured in the Gazette in October 2005 and the company that produced the map pledged to change it the following month.

But town councillor Jane Burton, who first spotted the mistakes in 2004, says the map is still on display.

The map, which is fixed to the wall near Morrisons supermarket in Estcourt Street and on the rear wall of Somerfield in the central car park, features six spelling mistakes.

The howlers are Hursteed Road instead of Nursteed Road, Gamaru Way instead of Oamaru Way, Beechfeild Drive, Le Marchat Close, Sprincers Close and Downslands Road.

Coun Burton is appalled that the mistakes are still there.

She said: "It's awful. If you are visiting Devizes and want to find where to go by looking at this map you wouldn't have a clue if a road was spelt wrong, such as Hursteed Road for Nursteed Road."

The map was commissioned by Wiltshire County Council's libraries and heritage department and produced by Co'dair Design and Publicity Limited based in Colchester.

The map is paid for by local companies, including the county council, who have advertisements alongside the map.

Vincent Rayner, cartography manager at Co'dair, said: "I'm at a loss to explain why those two maps should be there. I have spoken to the people who erect the boards and as far as they were concerned they were changed.

"If that hasn't happened I can only apologise, it was our intention that it should and we are prepared to put the matter right."
