The search in on for Southwest Skills

Across the South West the search is on for individuals and organisations who have excelled in learning. The 2008 South West Skills Awards are looking for learners and employers from across the region who can show the dramatic impact learning has had on their lives or business.

Now in their 2nd year, the South West Skills Awards celebrate those who have embraced training and development and have gone the extra mile to achieve great things.

Last year over 175 organisations and individuals were recognised for their achievements and this year's ceremony is set to reward even more success stories.

Malcolm Gillespie, Regional Director of LSC South West, said: "The Awards recognise learners and companies whose achievements might otherwise go unnoticed. We know from last year how many skills stars there are in the South West, achieving amazing feats and boosting the economy through their enhanced skills and we are looking to find more. So if you are a skills star, or the skills of your company have shone brightly in this past year please do enter the Awards as we could be celebrating your success!"

Any individual learner or organisations can enter the Awards if they have completed courses or projects, which have been funded by the LSC South West in the past year.

Employers who offer Apprenticeships can qualify for the Apprenticeship categories in the South West Skills Awards by entering the National Apprenticeship Awards.

The Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth represented the region at the 2007 National Apprenticeship Awards and were Highly Commended' in the Medium Employer of the Year category. Managing Director Walter Combstock is a former apprentice himself and said of the Award: "I firmly believe that Apprenticeships are the way forward for the hospitality industry as a whole. We work in a practical industry where excellent people skills are vital. "

Categories include: Apprentice of the Year, Learning Against the Odds, Train to Gain Employer of the Year and Achieving Skills for Life in the South West.

South West Skills Awards application forms can be downloaded from the LSC website on the South West pages www.lsc.gov.uk/regions/SouthWest, by request via email skillsawards@jbp.co.uk, or by calling 0117 907 3400.
