PLANS for a canal in central Swindon have cleared a major hurdle.

Swindon Council is backing a scheme to create a £52m waterway through the centre of the town.

Politicians on the council's cabinet have thrown their support behind the plan.

"Whenever my wife drags me shopping to different towns they all look identical," said councillor Justin Tomlinson, cabinet member for culture, leisure and recreation.

"This is our opportunity to have a unique offering which is for the long-term prospects of Swindon."

Councillor Bob Wright (Lab, Western) said the project seemed good, but he urged the council to talk to those who will be affected by the waterway.

"When we talk about this, please consider the residents of central Swindon," he said.

"There will be a major effect there for a prolonged period of time - and it is possible the canal will have a prolonged negative effect on the area."

Council leader councillor Rod Bluh (Con, Dorcan) said: "Swindon doesn't enjoy the best external image - and challenging that is partly what this is all about.

"As good as all the regeneration we have going on here is having a canal would really define us to the rest of the country.

"Others say it is a challenging project - but no pain, no gain."
