LOTS of tiny trout eggs from the Trafalgar Fisheries have been released into a tank in Salisbury Library as part of the Living Rivers project on the River Avon.

The tanks, run by the Wessex Salmon and Rivers Trust, give people a chance to watch the eggs hatch and gradually grow. The aim is to release the trouts into the Avon during the Salisbury International Arts Festival at the end of May.

Similar tanks are already used in schools as educational aids, used to teach subjects like evolution and reproduction.

Martin Gilchrist, who completes groundwork for the project, thinks they are a great idea. He said: "It's quite interesting to watch the things grow and have a peer and poke.

"The Living Rivers project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, is here to increase awareness and interest in the river. It stems out of a report on threats on the river. Most of it is privately owned, so people don't get to use and enjoy it.

"The project provides people with the chance to visit the river and make the most out of the access. It's also showing people what's there."

To have a look at the trout eggs and keep an eye on their progress, visit the tanks situated on the right when entering the library from the front entrance.
