RAMBLERS and dog walkers are likely to be greeted by an unusual sight at a local beauty spot this weekend.

The White Horse at Uffington will play host to an anti-wind farm protest on Sunday.

Joanna Lambert is organising a gathering of people opposed to the Westmill Wind Farm.

The project to install five wind turbines on the old airfield near Watchfield has almost been completed.

Mrs Lambert, a 47-year-old housewife from Shrivenham, said that she wanted to organise the gathering to see if she was alone in her feelings about the turbines.

She said: "I was devastated by the effect the turbines have had on our landscape and felt that to weep in private was not enough.

"I am organising this gathering to see if there are other people who feel as sad as me, or if I'm in isolation.

"Of course I would be thrilled if in future other vales are not destroyed and if these turbines were decommissioned and taken down.

"But for the here and now all I would ask is that people who are sad about this issue come together so we can at least be sad together."

Each 1.3MW turbine will stand 50m tall and have a 60m rotor.

Once operational the 30m blades will rotate, generating enough electricity to power the equivalent of 2,500 average-sized homes for the next 25 years.

However, Joanna has expressed doubts about the suitability of the location.

She said: "When Watchfield air base was started it was a heavy drop air base, and the reason for this was that they found there were exceptionally low wind levels around Watchfield."

The Westmill Co-Operative behind the £5m project was set up in 2004, under the guidance of community green power developer Energy4All.

There are 2,394 members of the co-operative, who all live within a 50-mile radius of the wind farm.

Adam Twine, Co-op director and local organic farmer, made the first steps to create Westmill Wind Farm some 15 years ago.

He said: "Westmill Co-op is a great example of what individuals who want to make a difference, can achieve when they get together.

"I hope Westmill will inspire other communities to have the courage to take similar initiatives in their own locality and in their own way."

The gathering against the farm will take place on White Horse Hill, Uffington from 11am on Sunday.
