School closures after power failure

CHILDREN in Malmesbury have a day off school after last night's bad weather caused a town wide power cut.

The secondary school and St Joseph's primary school have been closed for the day because of the power failure.

Although the town was affected by the storms the power came back on in most areas by 7.30am.

However the schools decided to close because they couldn't guarantee that it would stay on.

Elaine Pearce, receptionist at St Joseph's school, said: "We have lots of children coming in on buses so we took the decision to close early to save anyone being stranded.

"Also not being able to heat the school would have made things difficult. It didn't come back on here until nearly 9am.

"We will be up and running as usual tomorrow."

It is thought that the power went across the town in the early hours.

Deputy town clerk, Phil Rice said: "As far as I am aware it seems to be the whole town not the Reeds Farm area.

"It came back on in the centre at about 7.30am."
