THE first turf was cut on Friday to mark the start of work on the new £3.1m Highbury Primary School in Salisbury.
Children, teachers and governors from the school were joined by their local councillors to mark the event.
The new school, which is being built by contractor Beard of Swindon, is due to be completed in February 2009 when children will be able to move into their new classrooms.

It will serve 210 pupils with seven classrooms and two specialist learning centre rooms.
Wiltshire County Council cabinet member for education and youth development, Nancy Bryant, said: "It is a real delight to see work has now started on this innovative replacement school.
"New school buildings such as these reflect our heartfelt desire to act locally to improve the opportunities and education of children in our communities. The new school will provide a 21st century building for our 21st children."
Highbury Primary School is the final piece of the Salisbury three-tier review to realign the structure of lower, middle and upper schools into primary and secondary. This review has resulted in the closure of Pembroke Park First School and Fisherton Manor Middle School, both of which have now been demolished.
The surplus land on the site will be sold for residential development the proceeds from which will help pay for the new school. Proceeds from the sale of the former Pembroke Park School site nearby will also be used.
