PUPILS from schools in Westbury and Trowbridge have been invited to a free Physics Extensions Day at the University of Bath on Friday June 13.

In total, just 24 gifted Year 9 and 10 pupils from Matravers School, Westbury, St Augustine's School in Trowbridge and St Mark's School in Bath have received invitations.

The day has been organised by the University's Outreach team in partnership with its Department of Physics offering them opportunities not generally available within schools, due to curricula or resource limitations.

This event is aimed at gifted and talented pupils of outstanding potential in science.

The academically challenging day will offer pupils the chance to investigate Newton's Laws of motion and apply them to the building of a water rocket.

Following a demonstration and theory session, the pupils will then design and build a rocket in teams and compete to fly their rocket the furthest using the University's archery field as the launch location.

"We are delighted to be able to offer local pupils the chance to enjoy our Physics Extension Day," said Liz Andrews, Outreach Events Coordinator from the University's office of Widening Participation.

"It's particularly exciting that we can reach children from disadvantaged backgrounds that would not normally be able to engage in such an enrichment programme."
