THE team-mates of a young basketball player killed in a car crash are to hold a memorial game in his honour.

Matthew Bromley, 23, from Trowbridge, died after his car was in collision with a lorry near Chilcompton, Somerset, in May.

Mr Bromley, a former pupil at the Clarendon College, Trowbridge, was a rising star in the basketball world, playing for Trowbridge Hawks and Bristol's national league team, the Filton Flyers.

Now a select team from Trowbridge and the Flyers have challenged each other to a game in his memory.

Hawks coach Vince Marriott said: "We are trying to give due reflection to the fact that Matthew gave so much to basketball in the area. Things won't ever be quite the same without Matthew, he was such an inspiration, especially to the young children he coached.

"Matthew had a colossal impact on local basketball."

Both the Trowbridge and Bristol teams now plan to give Mr Bromley the special honour of retiring his shirt.

Mr Bromley grew up in Trowbridge and began playing basketball as a teenager at school.

In 1996 his team at The Clarendon College won through to the England Schools National Final.

He went on to join Trowbridge Hawks, where he was a hugely respected and well-like player who scored an average of 15 points per game last season and was six times voted the most valuable opposition player by sides the team faced. Last season he had also joined the Filton Flyers to play the game in the national league.

As well as playing Mr Bromley also coached children at primary and secondary schools in Trowbridge.

After leaving Clarendon he attended Bath University where he studied for a diploma in Sports Coaching.

Mr Bromley was travelling towards Midsomer Norton when his car was in collision with a lorry at a crossroads at the junction of the B3139 and the B3355. He died later at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

The memorial basketball match will be held on August 5 at 6pm at WISE Campus Filton College, Bristol.

Admission will be by donation and all funds raised will be donated to the British Heart Foundation at the request of Mr Bromley's family.
