Causing a flap

BIRDS of prey caused a flap when they were shown off to children at Trowbridge Sports Centre.

Falconer Rob Evans, 40, brought along an eagle owl, Harris hawk, buzzard, kestrel and a little owl, to the event at the Frome Road centre on Thursday.

About 30 children got the chance to hold one or two of the birds and ask questions about their diet, lifestyle and natural habitat.

Mr Evans, who lives in Chippenham but bases his Wings and Talons firm out of Reybridge, said KT the little owl caused the biggest stir.

"It's named after my father-in-law's initials," he said, "One of the kids was asking a lot of questions about the birds. They all wanted to know why one of the owls had furry feet.

"With children you can get the message across really early. I like to push the conservation education angle. A lot of people just don't get to see the wildlife around them."

Mr Evans said his birds are fed on a mixed diet, including quail, rats, mice, rabbits and one-day-old chicks.

He has taken his bird of prey show to other venues, including Whitehall Garden Centre, and will be visiting schools from the start of the new term in September.
