CHIPPENHAM Town assistant boss Richard Fey saluted a well-earned point for his side after their draw at Chesham United on Boxing Day.

The Bluebirds battled through awful conditions in Buckinghamshire and Fey was delighted with the character shown by the players.

“It was a great performance and a great point, especially against a team that are supposed to be the big money-spenders after getting to the final of the play-offs last season,” said Fey, who himself was named on the bench with boss Nathan Rudge after illness ravaged the squad.

“The boys were all excellent. We had to play people in positions they've never played in before, with Tom Knighton, Lee Phillips and James Guthrie all down with viruses and sickness bugs.

“For team spirit and character-building, it was brilliant and a good point away from home.’’ Fey also revealed that the Bluebirds have made a seven-day approach for a new full-back, whom they hope to sign in time for their New Year's Day derby with Frome Town at Hardenhuish Park.

Meanwhile Town, who go to Cambridge City on Saturday, will send their response to the Football Association after receiving referee Matthew Rushton’s report from the 2-2 draw with St Neots Town on December 15.

It is understood Pewsey official Rushton, who sent a player from each side off after a fracas following St Neots’ second equaliser, mentioned the incident in his report which was sent to the Bluebirds for their comments.

The Gazette & Herald understands that the club will deliver a written reply and submit video evidence, which was also sent to St Neots, some of which contradicts the report’s account.
