BOWLS: End of the Trophy road for ladies
NORTH WILTS ladies hopes of success in the Yetton Trophy are over for another season after they were beaten 80-71 by Taunton Deane in their fourth-round tie.
Winners of the national ladies indoor team championship competition in 2008, the Chippenhamclub saw their run come to an abrupt end as a poor last quarter proved costly.
North Wilts led comfortably for three quarters of the match but then slumped to a nine-shot loss.
Although trailing on one rink throughout North Wilts made a fine start across the board and led 22-14 at five ends and 42-28 at 10.
The lead was cut slightly but they still led 56-47 at 15 but then it all went pear-shaped as the Somerset side struck back hard.
In the next three ends across the board North Wilts only scored five shots while conceding 22 to go from 56-47 up to 61-69 down.
They were unable to pull the gap back between ends 19 and 21 and dropped one more shot overall to finally lose by nine.
At Westcroft, the rink skipped by Fizz Mace was always in control. It led 13-0 at five ends and 18-2 at 10 and finally won 30-9.
However, Janet Hardie’s four found life much tougher coming from 3-4 down at five ends to draw 9-9 at 10 but then her opponents edged away to lead 13-16 at 15 and finally win by 12 shots.
Away in Taunton, Deane Sue Cooke’s rink led 10-5 at ten ends and 15-7 at 15 but only scored two more shots and lost 18-17.
Alongside Jean Collier’s quartet were under the cosh throughout trailing 12-5 at ten ends and 18-7 at 15 and finally lost by 17 shots.
