MARLBOROUGH Amateur Boxing Club are calling on local businesses to help put the finishing touches on realising their dream of converting the Elcot Lane pavilion into their new home.
The club were given permission to move into the disused pavilion in 2009 and in July last year, their plans were propelled into action as they were awarded just under £44,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund.
Building work has since been completed at Marlborough ABC’s new base but, after increases in product and labour costs during the revamp of Elcot Lane, the club are on the hunt for sponsorship from local businesses.
“It has been a long road and over the last three years many people have been involved from the local community in supporting this local project – we are almost there,” said club secretary Steve Hurst. “We have a few remaining activities to complete and these should be finished by the end of February.
“Our intention is to formally open the club in late March.
“The club will provide local youngsters and adults, both male and female, with a place where they can become fit and healthy whilst learning the skills of an amateur boxer.”
Club chairman Andy Nash is a former Southern Counties amateur champion and his father Frank, of Five Stiles Road, was six-time British Stablelads boxing champion.
