A MIXED final-day card saw David Howell fail to make ground on the leaders at the Tshwane Open in South Africa.

The Broome Manor pro was three shots off the lead and sitting in seventh heading into today's final round at Copperleaf Golf & Country Estate.

But a one-under 71 resulted in him dropping down the leaderboard to tied 10th, nevertheless a hugely positive result considering Howell's less-than ideal preparation, caused by a neck and shoulder injuries.

He also had problems flying out to South Africa from his home in Dubai, caused by his visa being back in the UK.

Home player Dawie van der Walt won the tournament, two shots clear of fellow countryman Darren Fichardt.

Howell had been searching for a first European Tour victory in seven years.
