BROAD Hinton trainer Andy Turnell is reported to be on the road to recovery after suffering a stroke.

Jockey Nick Scholfield has visited Turnell in Swindon's Great Western Hospital after the Grand National-winning trainer was taken ill at his home at Broad Hinton in North Wiltshire last month.

"I've visited him a few times. He did have a stroke, but he is improving," said Scholfield.

"He's fine mentally, he's in good spirits and keeping the nurses well entertained.

"He's on the mend and making good improvement."

Turnell turned to training after a successful riding career and saddled Maori Venture to win the Aintree showpiece in 1987.
