Dennis Smith came close to a European Tour place
DENNIS Smith, Mark Cox and Jack Tweddell all picked up prize money at the UK Open qualifier in Wigan yesterday.
The trio reached round three to pick up £200 towards their Order of Merit totals, while their fellow Swindon players Johnny Haines and Chris Aubrey left with nothing.
PDC stalwart Smith beat Dyson Parody and Dan Russell before losing out 6-4 to Wes Newton, while Cox overcame Jordy Terburg and Brett Claydon before falling to Gino Vos.
Tweddell was given a bye in round one but recorded a victory over Andrew Johnson to earn his money, while his brother Aubrey’s hopes were ended in round two with a 6-2 defeat to former world champion John Part.
No local player was able to pick up any money on Saturday, although Smith and Haines did reach round two before losing to Mervyn King and Alex Roy respectively.
All five players were also in action on Friday night in a bid to qualify for the European Darts Trophy in Germany, with Smith coming closest to earning a place in the European Tour event as he lost out 6-2 to Jamie Robinson at the final hurdle.
