Chippenham Mini's

Under 7s

Chippenham's youngest age group taking part in this match against Winchester and played four matches. Their performance was quite varied with some patches of great play as well as periods that lacked focus. They recorded one win, two draws and one loss.

Match One

Chippenham got off to a fine start with an early Jack DObie try. This lead was built on and some penetrating running culminated in a try from Al MacKenzie. But before half-time, Winchester had levelled the scores with two tries of their own.

The second half saw Lewis Carter, Al MacKenzie and James Utton display some brilliant tagging but Winchester played better as a team throughout and secured the match at 5-6.

Match Two

The match started off as a scrappy affair, but Chippenham were relieved when captain Lewis Tilley went over for a try to give them the lead. The standard of play improved steadily as the game progressed. The hosts struggled with their tagging and Winchester had the better of the half, going in 3-1 up.

However, Chippenham really got going in the second half. The first play of the half saw Oliver Clements go over in the corner for a great try. George Brooks displayed some fantastic running and grabbed a brace of tries for Chippenham.

Winchester kept the pressure on and Edward Sealy made an outstanding try saving tag. Edward also managed to bag his own try just before the final whistle as Chippenham emerged victorious with a 5-3 win.

Match Three

This was a more balanced matched, characterised by strong individual performances and tries from Lewis with two and another from James and Al came as a result.

Winchester pressurised Chippenham from the start and the home side had to defend hard. If Chippenham had put in the same performance as their visitors, they would have grabbed the victory. The match was drawn 4-4.

Match Four

Another 4-4 draw but some good rugby was played by both sides on very tired legs. Joseph Pollard gave his team the lead after running straight through the centre of the Winchester defence. Lewis Tilley showed some excellent running and scored a hat-trick of tries. In the closing seconds of the match, George Brooks was denied a match winning try by a brilliant Winchester tag just short of the line.

Under 9s

Chippenham U9's A team played a two match series against Winchester A, whilst Chippenham B played two matches against Winchester B. Both contests were very strongly fought and evenly contested.

Match One

Chippenham A 10 Winchester A 5

In this first encounter, some strong forward play from the home side provided plenty of ball for their backs to work with. But a very resilient Wincesther defence held firm. Two individual tries from Jack Utton sealed the Chippenham win.

Match Two

Chippenham A 5 Winchester A 10

This second match against Winchester A, Chippenham once again showed great strength up front. Some superb tackling and rucking from the home side, in particular Man of the Match, Harrison Brain, kept a re-energised Winchester team at bay. After an early Winchester score, Chippenham scrum-half Tom Douglas made a darting run to level the match at 5-5. A score in the second half from Winchester just edged a very close match.

Match Three

Chippenham B 15 Winchester B 10

Chippenham's B team played well in this opening match against their Winchester counter-parts. Tries in the first half from Kieran Atkin and Jordan Mosely, who grabbed a brace, opened a lead that the visitors could not recover from and Chippenham emerged as the winners.

Match Four

Chippenham B 10 Winchester B 0

In the second game, once again these two evenly matched teams found it difficult to break each other down. At the break neither side had broken the deadlock. But the second half saw two great tries from Kyle Kent and Callum Stanley which sealed the victory and making it two wins out of two.

Under 10s

The Under 10s played four games against their visitors. The A team won both their matches but the B team had reversed fortunes, losing both of their games.

Chippenham A 3 Winchester A 2

Chippenham's now established slow start was punished with an early try for Winchester. The forward play was tentative and frequent turnovers by Winchester kept Chippenham at bay.

The second half was a totally different display. Chippenham began to play with confidence, tackled hard and constantly harried Winchester forcing frequent handling errors. A superby invidivual try from Waters levelled the score and he had a hand in the second try scored by Mackenzie.

Winchester then exploited a lapse in the Chippenham concentration and levelled almost from the restart. But Chippenham countered and exerted constant pressure on Winchester for the remaining minutes, getting close to their line.

Logut stole the opposition's ball from a line-out close to their line, offloaded to Davies who powered his way over for a hard-earned victory.

Chippenham A 9 Winchester B 0

This second game saw a fired up A team take on Winchester's B team who were no match for the home side. Scrum-half Enderby opened the scoring gathering the ball from a scrum close to the Winchester line and diving through on the blindside.

This set the tone and confidence for Chippenham grew. They moved the ball fluidly through the backs. Mackenzie found Davies with a long pass out and he ran from the half-way line to add the second. Smith added a third and Waters made it four just before the half-time whistle.

The second half saw more of the same from Chippenham and immediate pressure on Winchester saw Watson score. Gaunt added the seventh and with the Chippenham forwards growing stronger as the half progressed, Logut was rewarded for his efforts with an eighth try and the rout was completed with another breakaway try by Gaunt.

Chippenham B 3 Winchester B 3

Chippenham took the lead quickly through a neat try by outside centre, Keiron Seal. This move came from a sequence of strongly fought scrums and mauls which put Winchester on the defensive.

Chippenham kept up the pressure but Winchester managed to equalise. Determined play from their pack and scrum-half, Ben Ratken paid off when they drove forward at a scrum near the Winchester line and then moved the ball smartly out to the waiting Alex Whetton who forced his way over to put Chippenham back in the lead at the break.

A changed Chippenham side took to the field for the second half but were not able to win much ball. Winchester capitalised on their possession and uncertainty in the Chippenham defence to run in three tries. A late rally from the home side put them close to the Winchester line and Keiron Seal cheekily picked up in the loose to run in his second try on the blindside but it was Winchester who took the win.

Chippenham B 0 Winchester B 10

Chippenham failed to establish themselves in this second game for their B team and despite patches of reasonable play by the forwards and backs (not at the same time) and plenty of individual effort, Winchester's cohesive play and strong running was dominant throughout and ran out deserved 0-10 winners.

Under 11s

Chippenham Under 11's A team lined up to face some strong opposition from visitors Winchester.

A big physical side, Winchester soon made their mark on the game with more effective rucking than the home side. Chippenham were under constant pressure throughout the first half and eventually Winchester got through to socre a try shortly before the half-time whistle. This was also converted.

The second half match the first with Chippenham showing little form and Winchester soon took advantage and added a second unconverted try. Trialing by the five points, Chippenham managed to pull one back from Bradley which he converted to give a final score ; Chippenham 7 Winchester 12 After a short break, the two teams faced each other again and although performing slightly better than I the first game, Chippenham really failed to impress.

Their only bright moment came from a break from deep in their own half, leading to a try by Connall which Bradley converted. The second half saw the home side crumble giving away two tries and conversion to give a final score; Chippenham 7 Winchester 12 Contrasting with the poor performances of the A team, a simultaneous game was being played by Chippenham B.

In a reversal of fortunes, Chippenham B were in sparkling form playing some fine rugby and eventually taking victory by four tries to three. The Chippenham tries came from Charles, who scored a brace and one each from Rhys and William. Final score; Chippenham B 4 Winchester 3

Under 12s

Buoyed up by recent wins over Warminster and Clifton, Chippenham Under 12s took another impressive scalp at the weekend by beating Winchester 28 points to nil. The scoreline was made all the more remarkable as Winchester had beaten Chippenham comprehensively on the two previous occasions that the clubs had met.

Once again, an impressive performance by the pack saw Chippenham turnover numerous scrums and rucks, and giving their backs every opportunity to move the ball up the field which they did consistently which kept Winchester pinned in their own half. The tackling, which has improved immensely in recent weeks, meant that when Winchester did get the opportunity to attack, their progress was limited.

Hatch put in several excellent kicks to keep the pressure on the Winchester try-line and eventually Atkin scrambled his way over to put the home side into the lead. This was soon followed by a try from North, once again following some good ground play by the forwards, which they did with style. Again they kept the defence tight and refused to allow Winchester to make any headway. Loose balls were gratefully scooped up and used to good advantage. Hatch scored Chippenham's third try and Whetton added the fourth midway through the second period. All tries were successfully converted by Taylor.

An excellent game which boosted the team's confidence and self-belief.

Chippenham's B team put ina sterling performance against Winchester in this second match and DImech got them off to a fine start with a try early in the second half, after the score remained 0-0 at the half-time break.

Unfortunately, Winchester were determined not to go home with two defeats and they started to apply the pressure. Chippenham's defending was not up to the task and Winchester ran out the winner by six tries to one.
