MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: Crowd comes first for Brunnen
SWINDON fighter Alex Brunnen is more concerned about entertaining the crowd than winning his upcoming headline bout at Swindon MECA.
Brunnen is top of the bill at Swindon Fightclub’s Caged show on October 5, which will see a mix of professional bouts and Grade B matches combine as part of the biggest mixed martial arts show ever held in the town.
The Swindon man will take on Chippenham’s Shane Mansfield in an evenly-matched main event at welterweight, but is more concerned about entertaining the fans than claiming victory.
“It’s great to be back fighting in front of a home crowd again. That is always very special,” he said.
“I’m looking to fight and entertain people. Win, lose or draw I really don’t care as long as I give the fans who come out their money’s worth.
“I want to showcase my skills and show all I’ve learnt over the last few years, and if I can do that then I hope everyone who comes to watch will enjoy it.
“People sometimes take this too seriously and the way I see it is that there are thousands of people who fight in the world and you have to have your own special quality.
“My workouts are good and my mind is good, and I feel in a really good place at the moment.”
Brunnen is aware of Mansfield’s quality, but is keen to focus on his own performance rather than worrying too much about his opponent.
“I’ve seen Shane fight a few years ago but not since, but he’s a good fighter,” he said.
“I’ve focused too much on my opponents in the past and when you do that you end up getting in there and it doesn’t happen the way you want it to and it throws you.
“I’m not going to think about him and I just want to focus on myself, and when they were matchmaking me for this event I said I would happily fight anyone.
“All I need is someone the same weight as me and I will fight.”
Tickets for the event are priced at £20 or £40 VIP, and can be bought from any of the fighters involved, The Khyber on Victoria Road, The Forum or www.swindontickets.co.uk.
