RUGBY: Budgen to coach Marlborough

MARLBOROUGH have appointed former Aviva Premiership star Chris Budgen as their new head coach.
The 40-year-old, who lives in Tidworth and is a lance corporal with the Army, will lead the club’s challenge in Dorset & Wilts One North this season once he returns from service overseas in October.
Former tighthead prop Budgen, who made 134 appearances for Northampton Saints before helping Exeter Chiefs into English rugby’s top flight before retiring last season, helped out with Marlborough’s U16s last season and had already agreed to coach the club’s Colts set-up, but will now take the top job.
Club chairman Gary Sharp said: “The appointment of Chris is a huge bonus for all club players.
“Chris’s wealth of experience at the top level of the game will reverberate throughout the club through the significant number of coaches at all age groups.
“We are thrilled with his appointment and look forward to taking Marlborough from strength to strength.’’
Anyone interested in joining Marlborough as a player, coach or volunteer can contact either Mike Banfield (seniors) on 07786 916318 or Andrew Horwood (colts) on 07802 838335, or join the Tuesday and Thursday coaching sessions at the club on the Common throughout the season (6pm).
