WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: Blyskawica claim first win
BLYSKAWICA grabbed their first win of the Wiltshire League Premier Division campaign after lasting the distance at Devizes reserves to secure a 1-0 victory.
Boss Phil Trueman admitted his players had struggled for fitness in 3-2 defeats to Southbrook and Wilts Calne Town in their first two games, but that was not the case this time round.
The only goal of the game came in the first half, when the ball was played out from the back and Tom Kopinski flicked on for Ashley Chapman to finish.
Trueman said: “Due to our lack of pre-season we have tired in our last couple of games. We led against Southbrook and Wilts Calne Town and ended up losing both because of our lack of fitness.
“But by the third game the players were much fitter and that was enough to get us across the line.
“Devizes played a bit of long ball as the pitch is renowned to be quite hard out there and the ball bounces all over the place.
“It was a bit of a scrappy start but we got playing a bit of football and had a couple of good chances before Ashley Chapman scored. He scuffed his shot if I’m honest but it fooled the keeper and went into the net.
“In the second half it was still scrappy and there wasn’t much between the sides.
“We had a couple more chances and couldn’t score, but we got the win and that was something we needed.”
Blyskawica travel to Marlborough tonight as part of a five-fixture programme in the Wiltshire Premier.
“We’re starting to get some players back which is good as we have a good squad at the moment,” continued Trueman.
“We’ve had a similar start to last year where we have played well but then struggled because we didn’t have enough players.
“Hopefully that is different this year and we’ll be able to kick on.”
Elsewhere in the division on Saturday, Trowbridge made it three wins from as many starts as they overcame Wroughton 4-1.
An Otis Young spot-kick gave the Bees the lead at the break but a penalty at the other end following the resumption levelled the scores.
However, Trowbridge were rampant from then on and efforts from Jordan Pinder, Dan Barnett and Ian Groves handed them a comfortable victory.
Promoted Supermarine Sports Club continued to impress with a 2-1 victory over Ludgershall while Southbrook also grabbed their third win out of three with a 4-0 thrashing of Corsham reserves.
The early-season struggles of Purton reserves showed no signs of coming to an end as they were beaten 4-1 at home by Shrewton.
Dave Nolan put Chippenham 1-0 up against Marlborough in the 10th minute and after the break Daniel Heavey doubled the lead, before Marlborough bagged a consolation.
Wilts Calne Town stretched their unbeaten run to 23 games with a 3-2 victory over Vale of Pewsey.
In Division One, Malmesbury reserves put Blunsdon to the sword with a 15-0 annihilation.
Intel suffered a 7-1 defeat at home to Melksham reserves while Wroughton reserves had better success as they won 2-1 at Sarum.
Tonight in the Wiltshire Premier, Purton reserves host Wroughton while Wilts Calne entertain Chippenham Youth. Shrewton play visitors Devizes and Vale of Pewsey clash with Ludgershall.
