Wiltshire’s Olympic swimmer Grant Turner was in Devizes last week to hand out prizes at a holiday play scheme as part of his role as an ambassador for Gazette charity Bag4Sport.
Turner spent several hours at Camp Xtra at Devizes School watching youngsters take part in sport and craft activities and talking about his experience as an international swimmer.
He said: “It was fantastic to see children being encouraged to take part in a lot of activities they might not normally get to do such as fencing and film making.”
A date of December 8 has now been set for the Bag4Sport Foundation Santa fun run.
The charity hopes hundreds of people of all ages will dress in Santa hats or full costumes to run 5k around Devizes.
Tickets are on sale for a cabaret evening at The Bear on October 12 which will feature a four-course meal with a Deep South flavour. Tickets cost £35 per head.
On October 20 Bag4Sport will be involved in the Devizes Half Marathon which this year is being held in support of the Foundation.
Money raised from all these events will help provide grants for grass root sports and the Gazette Stars of Tomorrow winners.
Gazette & Herald readers will have a chance to vote for their favourites for this contest in coming weeks.
Judges are meeting on September 6 to draw up a shortlist of candidates from each of the Gazette edition areas. The shortlist will then be published in the Gazette so that readers have the final say on who should receive the grants.
