SWINDON WILDCATS: Moore proud to be named captain
SHANE Moore admits he was ‘honoured’ to be handed the captain’s role at Swindon Wildcats and says he has achieved a lifelong dream in leading his home town club.
The 26-year-old defenceman, assistant to Aaron Nell in the last EPL campaign, was yesterday announced as the 2013/14 skipper on a season-launching press day that also saw returning blueliner Jan Melichar unveiled as Wildcats’ latest import signing.
Moore will be assisted by Finnish import Henri Sandvik with a second assistant to be chosen based on performances in the upcoming exhibition games, with the first of these being at home to Slough on Wednesday.
And former Bracknell man Moore said he was delighted to be asked to lead the Wildcats by head coach Ryan Aldridge.
“It has been my goal to be the captain of my home town team since I was young and finally I have achieved that, so it’s fantastic for me,” said Moore.
“It was a real honour to be asked and I’ve now got to prove my worth with my on-ice performances.
“I will be a very vocal captain. I may not be the best player on the ice but I’m definitely a good motivator of players and I’ll let them know what they need to do.
“I will talk to guys and if they need a roasting I’m more than happy to do that, but I’ll also be the guy that pats them on the shoulder and gives them a bit of a boost.
“You have got to show straight away the sort of person you are and I’m not going to hide who I am. I will be on the bench and on the ice telling guys what to do, I’ve got no qualms about that.”
Czech veteran Melichar has signed for a fourth straight season at the Link Centre and will combine playing with coaching duties with both the Okanagan Academy and the Swindon Wildcats Academy.
Swindon are still looking for another import to supplement their line-up, with a goalscoring forward on Aldridge’s agenda.
Aldridge is looking for an overseas player that can clock up big points on a line with Jonas Hoog, but reiterated yesterday that he is prepared to wait to get the right man.
