RUGBY: Trowbridge league bid has more depth

TROWBRIDGE coach Steve Ojomoh reckons he now has the squad depth needed to make a more sustained promotion challenge.
Ojomoh’s men, who were runners up to champions Devizes in Southern Counties South last season, missed out on elevation to the next level after losing a play-off with Oxfordshire side Grove but kick off their campaign at Somerset’s Wells tomorrow.
The move to new headquarters at Hilperton – with their opening first-team fixture due against North Dorset there next weekend – has galvanised the club, with up to half a dozen new squad additions beefing up Ojomoh’s options.
The former Bath and England back row said: “We’re not into making any predictions or anything like that, but to succeed you need both a strong first and second team, with a good pool of 30 or 32 players “We didn’t have that last year and, ultimately, it was that which cost us, but the additions we’ve had means that has been addressed a bit.
The preparation has been good. We’ve approached things from a different angle and it can never be perfect.
“Ideally, we would probably have liked one more (pre-season) game, but it wasn’t possible and we’re as ready as we’re ever going to be.
“We’ve focussed a lot on skills (during the summer) because we felt we needed to do that and we’re moving into the second year in terms of our development.
“We sowed the seeds last year and we’re looking to build on that and take it up to another level.’’
Matt Howard again captains the first team and despite their lofty finish at the end of last season, Ojomoh has warned against assuming a similar finish this term.
“For me, it looks like we have a much stronger squad this season,’’ he added.
“That’s a good thing, because I think the league is going to be a lot stronger too.
“The teams who have come up and dropped down into our league look strong.’’
