WHILE many Wiltshire athletes are taking their end-of-season break, Grace Redmond-Davies will continue her excellent summer by representing Team South West at the UK School Games in Sheffield this weekend, writes Kevin Fahey.
The St Laurence School student has been selected for the 300m hurdles, the event in which she finished runner-up in the English Schools’ and third in the recent England Athletics Championships.
Only one athlete can be selected per event and with the Team South West being drawn from a geographical area comprising Avon, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Channel Islands, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Somerset, Sussex and Wiltshire it is quite an accolade for Davies-Redmond to get the call.
“I am excited but I am also feeling really tired as my season has been going on so long,” said the 15-year-old, from Bradford on Avon, who after a busy indoor season stretching into March launched her outdoor campaign on April 14.
“Everything seems to be hurting and I have quite painful shin splints so it has been hard to keep up the training but I want to go to Sheffield and win a medal.”
The four-day trip to Sheffield will be her penultimate competition of the season, with the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships at Birmingham the following weekend.
“Whatever happens I have had a good season but I will want to finish as well as I can,” she added.
“This will be my last 300m hurdles of the summer so it would be good to end on a high and then I really want to do well in the combined events and win a place in the team for the indoor international in December.”
Joining Davies-Redmond in the Team South West squad are Dauntsey’s student Nikko Hunt, the reigning English Schools’ pole vault champion and fellow Team Bath athlete Toby Pentreath, who has got the nod for the triple jump.
