HELLENIC LEAGUE PREMIER: Shrivenham leave it late to make their point
SHRIVENHAM scored twice in the dying moments as they snatched an unlikely point in a 4-4 thriller with Brimscombe at Barrington Park.
Matt Bown converted from the spot with two minutes left, before striker Josh Fowler fired home from outside the box to salvage a draw from the Hellenic Premier encounter.
Karl Nash had put league new boys Brimscombe a goal up in the first period, but Steve Robertson replied soon after the restart.
Nash then sent two further goals past keeper Jack Goodenough to complete his hat-trick just after the hour.
Richie Miles made it 3-2 with a strike that went in off the post before Ben Deakin seemingly put the game out of Shrivvy’s reach.
But Bown and Fowler pulled it back to 4-2 in the closing stages to leave boss Dave Turner in delighted mood.
“I’ve got to give my lads some credit for keeping going until the end,” he said.
“I thought the game was beyond us until we got the goals in the last few minutes, but once we got back to 4-3 you think there’s half a chance.
“I had someone chirping in my ear behind me saying we were going to get something out of the game even when we were 4-2 down.
“I nearly asked him to go and stand on the other side of the pitch because he was getting on my nerves.
“But as it turned out he was right and I was wrong, so that shows what I know. On top of our other points it’s a healthy return for our start to the season.”
Goodenough was handed the goalkeeping jersey due to injuries to Swindon Town loanee stopper Josh Helm and stand-in Luke Adams, with Stewart Thompson still unavailable.
While Goodenough has not had regular football so far this campaign, Turner felt it was the right decision to bring him in.
“Jack had only played 90 minutes of football this season and he didn’t do pre-season at all,” said Turner.
“In all honesty it probably wasn’t the game he needed having done so little, but he made a couple of good saves and there’s no blame aportioned to him for the goals.
“We took a gamble and as we got a point it looks like it was a gamble worth taking.”
