Whitbread blitzes Trophy rivals
OCTOGENARIAN John Whitbread rolled back the years to win the Bill Burn Trophy at Cirencester Golf Club.
He hit a nett 62 in the only trophy competition played by the senior section as a medal.
Whitbread dropped just three shots on his outward nine and his handicap of 20 made him almost uncatchable.
The winner of Division One was Gordon Stone with the lowest gross score of the day, his 73 giving him 63 nett.
Mark Woodhead was the runner-up in Division One with a nett 66 which included an eagle at the par-four 16th.
Ken Anderson triumphed in Division Two with a nett 64 from his gross 82. Martin Taylor was second with a nett 64.
In team competition, Cirencester were defeated 3-2 at Shrivenham Park but bounced back with a 4.5-1.5 success at home to Tewkesbury Park.
They then shared a 3-3 draw with Burford before being thumped 7-1 by hosts The Worcestershire.
Meanwhile, Dave Myler won the Hayter Trophy at Ogbourne Downs courtesy of a gross 76, with Jake Bolton just two shots behind.
Douglas Millington claimed the International Trophy by a single shot from Peter Greaves courtesy of a nett 67.
A single shot also decided the Veterans’ Trophy as Steve Sutton took the title after carding 69.
