DARTS: Smith wary of Baxter
SWINDON’S Dennis Smith is unsure which Ronnie Baxter he will face when the two go head to head at the German Darts Masters this afternoon.
The pair have been drawn together in round one in Sindelfingen in the latest European Tour event, with Smith looking to build on his last visit to Germany when he beat Raymond van Barneveld two weeks ago.
Smith and Baxter know each other well but the Swindon player is well aware his opponent is just as likely to have an off day as turn up in sparkling form.
“I have known Ronnie for a lot of years and played plenty of pairs matches with him when we’ve been away, and the outcome of this match depends which Ronnie turns up,” he said.
“He can turn up one day and be mediocre which would give you a real chance of winning but other days he turns up like his nickname, The Rocket, and absolutely flies and gives you no chance of holding on against him.
“As long as I turn up and do my bit I’m pretty confident.
“Last time we met was in Germany again and I beat him on stage, but I’ve also been given a hiding by him too so we will see what happens.”
Smith is already sitting on £500 of prize money having qualified for the event but is keen to add more as he continues his quest to make the World Championship.
“I go in there and I’m already £500 up which is a pretty good bonus, but I will be doing everything I can to get more prize money,” he said.
“It’s down to me to build on that all the way through and hopefully I can pick up where I left off before and take the confidence I have into it.
“You get to know your draw a month before so you’re not worrying about that on the day, and you have a chance to work on it and prepare properly.
“I beat Barney last time I was in Germany which is a real confidence booster for me.”
