ATHLETICS: In-form Chaundy equals PB at School Games
TRIPLE jumper Abbie Chaundy matched her own personal best in finishing sixth at the Sainsbury’s School Games.
Competing for the south west at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield, the Swindon Harrier equalled her under 17 women’s club record with a leap of 11.16m in the third round.
She also leapt over 11m in the fifth round but her prior jump meant she ended sixth, matching her effort at the English Schools’ Championships.
At the Great North Run, Gary O’Brien finished 83rd overall in 1:16:33 and a superb eighth in the male vet 40 category.
Michael Roderick (1:26:39), Steve Connolly (1:43:19), Ben Humphrey (1:52:41), Jenny Connolly (1:56:11) and Shelly Johnson (2:01:28) also competed.
At the Bristol Half Marathon, Alex Griffin ran 2:18:31 and James Harraway clocked 2:27:13.
Harriers youngster Ciaran Cooper won the under 17 men's 800m at the Hampshire Grand Prix. He timed in at 1:58.28, beating a quality field by almost six seconds.
Meanwhile, Alex Bampton won the 5km Swindon Parkrun for the fourth week in a row, finishing in 17 minutes exactly.
Debutant Matt Raymond was the second junior home and fifth overall in 18:18, while Barrie Brown won the male over 35 category as he came eighth overall in 19:00.
Jenny Garth was first in women’s over 55 category and was the fourth woman across the line in 24:11.
Jack Fawcett finished 12th overall and Sam Davies was just behind in 13th.
