Birks out for season after breaking back
THE Robins will have to do without reserve Ashley Birks for the rest of the season after the youngster broke his back in two places on Friday night.
Birks was involved in a crash during the Westernapolis individual meeting at Plymouth on Friday, and was taken to hospital where the back injury was confirmed.
The Yorkshireman tweeted that he had feeling in his arms and legs on Saturday morning, but not his chest, and that he is having surgery this morning to insert two rods into his back.
He tweeted: “Thanks for all the messages #speedwayfamily. I’ve badly broken my back in 2 places but luckily have feeling in my legs and arms, only in my chest area I can’t feel. Waiting to have an op for 2 rods down my spine. Thanks everyone.! Cya all soon x x x.”
Robins boss Alun Rossiter has booked Lewis Kerr to guest in tonight’s Elite League play-off semi-final first leg clash with Poole, but was quick to send his best wishes to Birks.
He said: “It’s devastating for Ashley and we wish him well for his operation and hope he is up and about as soon as possible.
“It means we have to bring in a guest at reserve, but naturally our thoughts at the moment are with Ashley.
“I’ve looked at all the available options and I’m sure Lewis will do a good job for us.
“He’s been getting a few double-figures scores in his Premier League matches with Newcastle recently and also had his first Elite League race win at King’s Lynn earlier this week.
“He’s improving all the time and we’re looking forward to him joining up with us on Monday.”
