RUGBY: Marlborough 83 Colerne 3
3:30pm Tuesday 1st October 2013 in Sport
MARLBOROUGH’S rip-roaring start to the league season continued as they blasted past the 200-point barrier in only their third match of the season.
Colerne took the lead with a penalty from Ryan Willcox but, as the game started to open up, the home side’s influential back row began to take control.
Flankers Joe Mitchell and Jonny Mantle and number eight and captain Jamie Pittams combined for Mitchell to score the first try, Nathan Morgan booting the first of nine conversions.
Pittams then stole a lineout and stormed upfield, good rucking from Shaun Anderson allowing Morgan to cross the line.
Colerne’s cause was not helped by the sending off of Ashley Salter after a flashpoint, Morgan’s massive crossfield kick setting up a lineout won by Mantle that allowed Mitchell to storm through for his second from 50 metres.
A break by Pittams and Mitchell’s unselfish pass to full back Laurence Baker added another try, before Mitchell completed his hat-trick.
Centre Nick Clarke’s break allowed new centre Rhys Butler to run in another before half time.
Baker completed his second hat-trick of the season in the second period, while Bruce Vuetanatotoka made a scoring return to the team and Mitchell added two more.
Pittams also got on the scoresheet and Mantle touched down to complete the rout.
