MELKSHAM edged a closely-contested match to end the unbeaten start of their visitors.
The first try for for the home side arrived for Phil Stone after pressure on the Fairford line, Rob Bailey adding the conversion.
Fairford continued to play controlled rugby and were rewarded shortly after with an unconverted score.
Melksham responded with a deft kick to the corner, the lineout resulting in an unconverted pushover try with Aaron Brailey gett the scoring touch.
A period of pressure from Fairford caused Melksham to give away a penalty before a defensive lapse saw the visitors go over for a converted score and a 15-12 half-time lead.
Fairford started the second half the way they had ended the first, a converted try seeing them ease away and a well-taken drop goal moved them 25-12 clear.
But Melksham roared back, with Brailey getting another try, converted by Bailey.
A third try for Brailey moved them to within striking distance and, in the dying minutes, Carl Wilkins’ try wrapped up victory.
Trowbridge 2nd were 8-3 winners over Bradford on Avon.
