CRICKLADE slipped to their second Dorset & Wilts 2 North defeat of the campaign at Chippenham 3rds on Saturday.
Following a 78-3 victory over Supermarine 2nds and a 77-0 home thrashing at the hands of Marlborough, Cricklade were at last involved in a close contest but ended up being beaten 22-12.
A shortage of fit or available players meant head coach Andy Sear was forced to press a number of veterans back into service.
Early play favoured Cricklade and they should have made more of their opportunities but Chippenham surged into an 8-0 lead.
Dan Bown responded for the hosts, picking up a chip through the heart of the hosts’ defence with ease to race under the posts, while Danny Lloyd added the extras.
A point behind at the break, Cricklade lost their way and discipline in the second half and had the home team’s kicker been better the points difference could have been substantial.
The 12-point lead opened up by Chippenham was ultimately too much for the visitors to claw back, despite Mitch Bryan’s score after fine work from Simon Howse.
As Cricklade chased the converted try which would have seen them claim a lucky draw, Chippenham grabbed the penalty which put the tie out of reach.
