HOCKEY: Swindon gain first Championship win
SWINDON got off the mark in the Davis Wood Hockey League with a 2-0 victory over Westbury & UB.
Having lost their first two games of the Championship campaign, Swindon were in desperate need of a win to kick-start their season and managed just that thanks to goals from Henry Cheney and Tom Wickens.
Henry Cheney smashed home a penalty corner on the stroke of half-time after some great build up play from Wickens up front to put the visitors ahead at the break and they quickly doubled their advantage after the interval.
Luke Cejer’s terrific pass into the near-post set up Wickens, who obliged with a clinical finish.
The second period saw Swindon dominate, with Chris Parsons in the centre of midfield the cog in the works, while a couple of timely saves from Alan Gough in the Swindon goal kept the hosts at bay.
Westbury wasted a flurry of late penalty corners, offering no shots on goal, and spent the final minutes of the game reduced to 10 men following a dismissal for dissent & foul play.
This Saturday Swindon face Cheltenham A at Isambard School, with an 11am push-back.
