CLARRIE Dunbar defeated Swindon rivals Westlecot 14-2 in the first round of the top club event, but the match was closer than the score suggests.
Featuring in the mixed inter-club national knockout competition for the first time this season, Standerwick-based Dunbar triumphed at the home of their opponents.
The victory was built on robust performances in the triples and fours, skipped by Keith Bailey and Graham Shadwell.
However, the one-shot victory of Debbie Shadwell and Andrew Colebrooke in the pairs over Wetslecot’s Lucy and Neil Smith proved decisive.
Having surged to a 13-4 lead at the halfway point the Clarrie pair then saw their lead diminish as the Smiths fought back to lead 16-13 with three ends to play.
Digging deep, the Clarrie pair took a 5-1 advantage in the last end to take the win 18-17.
Thelma Deane came back from 10-4 down after 11 ends to win 15-12 in the ladies singles.
Clarrie will now play Clevedon, who beat North Wilts 10-6 in their first-round match.
