DARTS: Swindon's Cox targets quarter-finals in Holland
MARK Cox is looking to follow in the footsteps of fellow Swindon player Johnny Haines this weekend as he competes in the Dutch Darts Masters.
Cox goes up against Studley’s Andy Smith in round one in Koningshof this afternoon having earned his spot at the lucrative European Tour event playing in Ireland earlier this month.
At the same event a year ago Haines put in the best performance of his career to beat five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld to propel himself to a place in the World Championship, and with a spot at Alexandra Palace within reach Cox is looking for a repeat.
“This is a very big tournament for me because if I do well I can get in the Worlds off of it, but I think I need to get to the quarters to give myself a chance,” he said.
“A few of the guys I’m around are not playing there so it’s a good chance for me to take advantage.
“Last year Johnny went there and beat Barney and eventually got into the World Championship and hopefully I can do the same as him.”
Cox is happy to have drawn Smith having beaten the Pie Man when the two met in the European Tour in Dusseldorf earlier in the year, but is still expecting a tough encounter.
“As far as draws go this is one of the easier ones, and it could certainly have been a lot harder, but no game is easy at all.
“I beat him the last time I played him in Dusseldorf so hopefully I can do it again.
“Playing on the stage helps you focus that little bit more and concentrate harder but it’s all about how it goes on the day.”
If Cox wins this afternoon he will face either John Part or Campbell Jackson in round two tomorrow afternoon.
