Fitness first for Swindon College Old Boys
CHAIRMAN Martin Peaple would be as happy to get through a Southern Counties North game without any more injuries as he would to secure maximum points tomorrow.
Swindon College Old Boys side have been beset by injuries this campaign, a situation that has only slightly improved following a fortnight’s break from action.
Centre Greig O’Brien will be back in the starting line-up after several weeks out with a shoulder injury as Old Boys go in search of their first win of the league season at Alchester.
“At the last count it was 11 players that were missing and they are all out for around two, three or four weeks,” said Peaple.
“We haven’t played Alchester for a while because they went up a few seasons ago, but it was tough when we played them before.
“We’re still looking for that elusive first win and it’s there for us at some point, we just need to get across the line.
“The main thing at the moment is to get through games without any injuries and if we can do that then that’s as much of a bonus as anything.”
Bearing in mind Old Boys’ concerns, Peaple believes a realistic stance is to target victories when faces start to return to the fold.
“We’re looking to consolidate at the moment and once we get players back we can target a couple of games before Christmas to get back on track,” he said.
“It’s always useful to pick up bonus points, that’s always going to help. If we can get them under our belts then that can only be a good thing.
“I don’t want to take anything away from the lads that have come in. The likes of Dan Thomas and Lee Spillane have come in and been outstanding.”
