WOMEN'S HOCKEY: North Wilts defeat county rivals
NORTH Wilts gave a commanding performance to defeat West Wilts 6-2 in Wessex Division 1.
North forged ahead when Amy Cullen sent home a cracking strike from the tightest of angles.
And soon after Cullen made it two when she blasted an unerring effort into the corner.
West pulled one back but Sophie Richardson pounced on the rebound to restore North’s two-goal advantage.
After spurning plenty of short corner chances in the first period, North finally converted by that method just before half-time.
Ten minutes into the second period the lead became 5-1, before Meg Emms was unable to keep out a West strike and the scoreline moved to 5-2.
Steph Penny had a goal disallowed but North had the last laugh when Mollie Leslie flicked the ball past the keeper.
Elsewhere, Wootton Bassett gained a much-needed victory over Cheltenham Civil Service as they triumphed 2-0 in North Division.
Bassett started nervously and suffered a blow when defensive midfielder Tegan Buchanan was taken off with a knee injury.
However, the visitors began to play neat possession hockey and Suzanne Lello put her side 1-0 up when she waltzed past two defenders and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Buchanan returned to the field and the advantage was increased when a slick short corner routine resulted in Suzanne Coles applying the finish.
After the interval, Bassett soaked up pressure from short corners and then settled down.
They thought they had a third goal when Vicky Sammon fired home from a short corner, only for the goal to be disallowed.
However, ultimately that did not matter as Cheltenham didn’t get on the scoresheet and Bassett held on to win.
Meanwhile, Swindon were sunk 5-3 at home to City of Bath in a Premier Division 2A clash.
North Wilts 2nds were hammered by 5-0 by Thornbury 3rds in Berkeley Division 3 and Wootton Bassett 3rds lost 3-0 to Bath Buccs 5ths in Wessex Division 2.
