DAVE Webb insisted his side are yet to find top gear despite their 5-0 hammering of Thatcham on Saturday.

Swindon Supermarine went into the contest on a run of five games without a win but a brace from Josh Parsons and goals from Craig Curtis, Joe Tustain and the impressive Danny Hilder saw them return to winning ways.

Marine terrorised their opponents down both flanks through Hilder and Josh Morse and it could easily have been a greater margin of victory, while goalkeeper Kent Kauppinen maintained his concentration on an otherwise quiet afternoon to save a late Gareth Thomas penalty.

Webb was proud of his side and was delighted to have found the winning formula once again, although he admitted after the game there is still more to come from his side.

“It was superb and I’m really pleased for everyone associated with the football club because going five games without a win is hard,” he said.

“We’ve been a bit unfortunate in a couple of those games where we could have got more, but to get the win in front of our own supporters is fantastic.

“Our football at times was very good, although we are not at full tilt just yet, but the win and a clean sheet will give everyone a really big confidence boost.

“We scored early which always helps because we always look to take the initiative and set the tone, and that’s what we did. Both Josh Morse and Danny Hilder set the standard with their wing play and created plenty of chances which is really encouraging.”

Marine started the brighter and looked to move the ball down the right hand side, and it only took them four minutes to produce the opening goal as Parsons connected with Hilder’s swinging free kick to head his side into the lead.

Thatcham fired a warning shot as Carl Evans rattled a header against Kent Kauppinen’s post, but Marine were soon back on the offensive again as Hilder cut inside an let off a rocket of a shot which visiting keeper Bob Durrant fumbled over the bar.

Ashley Edenborough couldn’t capitalise on Kauppinen’s long ball forward but the lead was soon doubled when Curtis swept up to flick the ball home after Morse’s corner wasn’t properly cleared.

After 15 minutes of parity, with both teams keeping possession well, the game was all-but wrapped up just a minute before the break when Parsons’ tame free kick somehow dribbled under the body of visiting keeper Durrant, who cut an embarrassed figure as he trudged off the pitch at the interval.

The hosts picked up where they left off after the break as Chris Taylor fired wide and after the Marine skipper missed the target from range twice more the visitors had their first opportunity of the half as Yashwa Romeo headed over the top.

The pace of Morse had been causing the Thatcham defence problems all afternoon and after the winger somehow managed to keep an over hit ball in on the byline his cross was perfect for substitute Joe Tustain to head over the keeper and into the net.

The game descended into a scrappy affair as neither side was able to keep control of the ball, but Marine were barely troubled until Gerrard took a tumble in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Captain Thomas struck his spot kick well but keeper Kauppinen flew to his right and palmed the ball away with two strong hands.

With the clean sheet still intact Marine continued to attack, and as Hilder once again cut inside off the right flank he turned down the easy ball across the box and drove home himself into the opposite corner to complete the rout.
