THE Swindon players will be looking to send club stalwart Paul Wakefield off in style when they travel to Maidenhead tomorrow.

Long-serving centre Wakefield, who has played for the club for more than a decade, is likely to be making his final appearance for the Greenbridge Road side in Berkshire as he is set to move to Nottingham.

Fly-half Adam Westall admitted Wakefield will be a loss both on and off the pitch but is hopeful of allowing him to depart on a winning note.

“Unfortunately Paul is moving on with his work which is a real shame because he’s a good player and a good guy,” he said.

“He’s become a bit of a club stalwart really having played for the club for the last 10 or 12 years and is an ex-captain too so it’s sad to see him leave. He’s been a real cornerstone.

“This is likely to be his last game, although I think he may still make himself available, but for this season he will be up in Nottingham.

“It would be great to send him off with a win and we will be doing all we can to do that.”

Maidenhead play on a 4G pitch which suits Swindon’s attacking style, but Westall is expecting a tough game in what is their last match before the Christmas break.

“The conditions are probably going to suit us because it’s a hard track which will make it easier to throw the ball around,” he said.

“We always try and get to 40 points by Christmas, although we have a few more now (43), and we are there or there abouts.

“Another four points would make the festive period a happy one but it will be hard because they are coming down from the league above.

“They’ve found their feet which is sometimes hard when you come down but they’ve adjusted well.

“They beat Oxford Harlequins a couple of weeks ago, a team we got nowhere near, so they are obviously a good side.”
