BOWLS: Ladies on a roll for North Wilts
NORTH WILTS ladies are featuring prominently again this season in the Area 30 section of the women’s national championships.
Sue Cooke has already booked herself a place in the latter stages of the Champion of Champions competition at Hayling Island at the end of January after winning Area 30 and the inter-area final to reach the last 16.
There is every possibility several more players from the Westcroft-based club in Chippenham could join her.
Jean Collier, Alex Jacobs and Cooke have reached the area 30 final in the Two Wood Triples and will face Susan Osborne’s triple from Bristol.
They booked their place in the final with a 13-12 away win over Val Osmond, Sue Latham and Cynthia Winter-Alsop (Thornbury) scoring a decisive single on the 18th and final end after being pegged back from 12-8 up at 15.
Janet Hardie has qualified for the Over 60s Area 30 singles final after a 21-15 victory in the semi-finals over Kathy Walker (Clarrie Dunbar).
She now meets in the final Ros Constant (Bristol), wife of ex-England and Gloucestershire cricket umpire David Constant, by January 19.
North Wilts were guaranteed a finalist in the O60s pairs as Hardie and Jane Taylor were drawn in the semi-finals against club mates Jean Collier and Irene Button.
It was a close match throughout on Tuesday evening with the scores tied 18-all at 19 ends but then Hardie and Taylor picked-up a three and a two to win 23-18.
They will play Susan Osborne and her partner from Bristol in the Area 30 final by January 19.
North Wilts still have an interest in the Area 30 ladies national pairs, triples and fours championships.
Cooke and Jacobs have reached the pairs semi-finals and will play Susan Osborne (Bristol) by January 5 while in the other semi Janet Hardie and Jane Taylor face Stefanie Branfield (Clevedon).
In the triples Cooke, Jacobs and Hardie are due to face Margaret Dyer (Clevedon) in the semi-finals while the same trio plus Val Molton have been drawn against Kim Smith (Clarrie Dunbar) both games to be played by January 5.
