Keeper Thompson eyes a longer stay

This Is Wiltshire: Conor Thompson Conor Thompson

CONOR Thompson kept a clean sheet on his Swindon Supermarine debut and then stated his desire to remain at the club beyond his initial one-month loan spell.

The 18-year-old Torquay keeper, formerly part of the Swindon Town youth setup, pulled off a number of stops to keep out Paulton in the 3-0 Southern League Premier Division victory on Saturday.

And Thompson is already hoping he will be able to extend his stay at the Webb’s Wood Stadium into February if it means he can get competitive minutes in his locker.

He said: “It’s frustrating not playing. I haven’t played for a while now, so I just need to get some games, help these boys out and use it as some experience.

“Game time is the main thing and getting some performances under my belt and taking it from there.

“I’m here till January 25 and if it’s all going well and both parties are happy, I’d like to extend it. I just want to keep playing football, that’s the main thing.

“Torquay are getting a few people to come up and watch in the next few weeks.

“I’ve got to give the fixture list back to the gaffer at Torquay (Alan Knill) as they want to see how I’m doing and when I need to come back.”

Marine’s victory over high-flyers Paulton was a welcome boost as the South Marston side aim to boost their play-off push over the festive period.

Goals from Chris Taylor, Ash Edenborough and Josh Parsons were enough for victory and Thompson believes his team fully deserved the three points.

“It was a good performance from the boys and nice to fit in and get a good result on my debut,” he said.

“Towards the end of the first half they had quite a lot of pressure, but I think we dealt with it quite well. I don’t think they really troubled us at any time.

“The defence did really well, especially as Bamps (Dave Bampton) came off injured, it’s good that we recovered from that.

“It was three great goals that we scored as well.”
