ALAN Low is refusing to get carried away despite watching his Wootton Bassett side to a third straight victory with a 39-29 win over Wallingford.

In what was the Ballards Ash side’s first run-out after the Christmas break, they were always in control as they continued their rise up the Southern Counties North table.

Despite the growing confidence around the club Low is not getting over excited and admitted there is still plenty of hard work ahead for he and his team.

“We played reasonably well but we looked pretty rusty with the ball in hand if I am honest,” he said.

“We spoke after the game when we were warming down in the gym and there wasn’t one person who said we had played to our potential which was really good to be honest because if we can self-reflect like that after games it’s a good thing.

“There was a bit of a lapse in terms of our defence because we fell back into some bad habits which we need to address, but we got the win so we have to be positive.

“We lacked the execution but we haven’t played for five weeks or so, so it’s rare you would come back and be at your best after that. We let them have a bonus point too which was a shame.

“We do have to take positives away and look forward to our next game but we can’t get too carried away with it. We have to keep working hard and that’s exactly what we will do going forward.”

Low is pleased with what his side have produced in the opening half of his first season at the club and is hopeful of bolstering his squad in the coming weeks.

“We sat down at the start of the season and said our review point would be Christmas. Having done that we’re happy with the style of rugby we’re playing and things are going okay,” he said.

“Hopefully we are going to be able to add to our squad a little in the next few weeks and we will see if some of the players who have said they are interested turn up.”

The Bassett seconds are at home to Swindon College Old Boys seconds this weekend, with a 2.15pm kick-off.

The Old Boys senior side were without a game in Southern Counties North this week.
