WILTS SENIOR CUP: Purton strike late to earn semi
PURTON boss Chris Pethick sees no reason why his side can’t lift the Wiltshire Senior Cup this season after coming from behind to win their quarter-final tie at Corsham.
After slipping behind in the first-half, a Marcus Hall penalty levelled matters before Blaine Fitzgerald scored with stoppage time approaching to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Pethick was delighted to see his side stage such a spectacular fightback in order to progress and admitted his players’ ability to take their chances when they came along held the key.
“We left it late but to come from behind and a win a game late on like that was fantastic, we’re all over the moon,” he said.
“It wasn’t the best game to watch and there wasn’t a lot of football played due to the conditions but we battled well and eventually got through.
“They were the better side in the first-half but we got it together in the second. We took our chances when they didn’t and that was a big thing for us I think.
“Our goalkeeper played well too and made some very important saves but it was a good all-round team performance from us.
“Blaine scuffed the winner but they all count and we’re looking forward to the next game already.”
Bemerton Heath, Melksham and Bradford Town stand in Purton’s way as they bid to claim the county cup, but Pethick believes his side are in with a chance.
“This is the furthest we’ve got in the Senior Cup since I’ve been at Purton and we’ve been a little unlucky in recent years because we always seem to have ended up playing either the winner or runners-up in early rounds.
“This year we’ve managed to get a bit further in it and we’ve all been saying to each other there’s no reason why we can’t win it.
“It would be great for the club to at least get to the final and then we would love nothing more than to go on and win it.
“I’m chuffed for the lads because they all deserve it.”
The semi-final draw is due to be made later in the week with the tie expected to be played in March.
