DEREK Graham has challenged his Warminster Town side to keep their momentum going after they got back to winning ways last weekend.

Warminster built on their impressive point at high-flying local rivals Bradford Town with victory over Roman Glass St George at Weymouth Street.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, midfielder Alex Lapham netted the home side’s opener early in the second half. He was set up by Sam Babatunde before Lapham sent Louis Sparey racing clear shortly afterwards, with the striker lobbing the Roman Glass keeper to make it 2-0.

“We really wanted the game to be on so that we could keep the momentum going after the result against Bradford and the guys played really well in some difficult conditions,” said Warminster joint-boss Graham.

“We could have scored even more goals but the pitch was really heavy and some of the lads were absolutely knackered towards the end.

“We’ve just got to hope that this weekend’s game (at home to Chard Town) is on so that we can keep things going.”

Graham is hoping that he’ll be able to call on the services of dual-registered Paulton Rovers man Lapham for a few games more.

He added: “Alex was injured for most of last year and he’s still getting his fitness back but he’s just amazing at this level.

“He’s not quite there yet so hopefully we’ll be able to have him for another three games or so.”

  • WEDNESDAY night’s matches for Westbury United, away at Chard and Corsham Town, at home to Toolstation League First Division rivals against Chippenham Park were postponed.

It’s up to us, says Paul

PAUL Shanley says Bradford Town’s fate this season is firmly in their own hands.

Bradford, whose trip to Wincanton Town last weekend was curtailed by a waterlogged pitch, are eight points clear at the top of the Toolstation League First Division.

But Shanley, who was named First Division manager of the month for January, is pleased that his team are fully in charge of their title quest.

“In previous seasons, we’ve been relying on other teams to do us favours but at least this year, we know that it’s down to us,” said the Bradford manager.

“Shepton (Mallet) won on Tuesday so the gap is down to eight points but we’ve still got a game in hand.

“I would prefer to have the points on the board but that’s the way it is.

“We’re happy with how things are going and it’ll be our own fault if we don’t get promoted.

“The award is a surprise but I don’t know how they work it out.

“As I’ve said before, it’s not about me because I just pick the players to go out there – the award is really for the whole club.”
