YOUNGSTER Callum Wright is hoping he can continue to make the grade for the Bluebirds and earn a regular spot in Mark Collier’s starting line-up.

The 19-year-old student, who plays for the University of Bath in midweek, made his third consecutive start fin last weekend’s goalless draw with Corby Town.

Utility man Wright, who had a spell at Wootton Bassett Town earlier this season, was snapped up by Collier within the Bluebirds boss’ first few weeks in charge and the former Swindon Town and Chelsea academy player is hoping that his patience has paid off.

“I’ve bided my time, which I expected. I’ve known Mark for a long time through different things to do with football and I’ve been at a few clubs but this suits me well, with being at uni in Bath,” said Wright, who played alongside Great Britain Olympic sprinter Adam Gemili during his spell in Chelsea’s youth set-up.

“I play at the uni and we have a link with the U21s at Bath City so I was doing a bit of that (before joining Chippenham). Before that I played academy football at Bristol City and Swindon and I was at Chelsea for a few years.

“It’s good to come in to the team and be unbeaten so far – I’m enjoying it. Hopefully I can have a good run of games in the team.

“By trade, I’d say I was a centre midfielder but I’ve played at right-back a few times over the years and as long as I’m in the team, I’m happy.

“I want to keep my shirt and it’s only good for the team if there’s competition to push us on.”

Wright was part of a solid defensive display from the Bluebirds against Corby and thought that a goalless stalemate was the right result at Hardenhuish Park.

He added: “It was nice to get a clean sheet as a back four and as a team but it’s hard to get a result on a pitch that’s bumpy and bobbly. Nil-nil was probably a fair result and it was good to get a point out of it.

“There’s good morale within the team and hopefully we can get on a little bit of a run now and get moving on.”
