WOOTTON Bassett under 16s’ 17-0 victory at Chippenham this weekend was enough for them to secure an impressive double as they completed back-to-back league title victories.

Having won the Wiltshire Division Two title last campaign, a professional team performance, particularly in the opening half, secured their second title in as many seasons in tough weather conditions.

The Bassett youngsters’ displays throughout the season saw them finish two points clear of Devizes in second, as well as scoring the most and conceding the fewest points throughout the term, leaving the coaching team of Mark Roshier, Gary Darragh, Jonathan Davies and Laurie Sweeney delighted.

“This really is a great achievement for the team because I’ve never heard of a side to do this before,” Roshier said. “Maybe teams who have been backed by money might have done it but it’s certainly a rare thing to have achieved.

“We are a team with no county players so to have won this is testament to the hard work, team play and desire of all the boys.

“In rugby, playing at 16 is such a vital age because players now start looking to the future and for us to have achieved so much is a great thing.”

Chippenham started the game strongly and Bassett had to be at their best to keep them at bay, but the champions-elect were soon in front as a quick penalty from Dan Sweeney eventually ended up back in the hands off the fly-half who skipped through to score the opening try.

The try was converted and the score remained at 7-0 until Jake O’Neil picked the ball up after the interval and stormed through the Chippenham line to touch down. Sam Haskell took the conversion but missed the target, although Scott Douglas was able to add five more points to the Bassett total before the end of the game.
