Royal Wootton Bassett coach Alan Low was not satisfied with his team’s performance despite their 47-6 win over Milton Keynes.

Bassett made a successful return to their Southern Counties North campaign after a long lay off due to the recent bad weather.

Milton Keynes had beaten the Ballard’s Ash side earlier in the season, and Bassett were without Phil Bardwell, Tim Gallimore, Will Hooper, Duncun Fulling and Carl Grant on Saturday.

Despite several forays into the visitors’ 22, Bassett were unable to capitalise on their chances and only went into the break with a 7-3 lead.

Low gave his side a some harsh words at the break and was insistent that his team cannot expect to perform for just 40 minutes.

He said: “Our performance wasn’t fantastic by any way shape or form. The first half was woeful.

“It had been four weeks since we last played a competitive match and it showed; we made an awful lot of very basic mistakes and should have built up a decent lead before the half.”

A much more physically dominant Bassett started to finish their chances in the second period - securing the bonus point by the 65th minute. Bassett continued to press home their advantage, and finished off the match with a flurry of three tries in the last five minutes.

Low said that he didn’t just reserve his home truths for half time but spelled it out for his players at the end of the game as well.

He added: “It was a little bit of a shock for some of them. I gave them a rollicking at the end and it is something they need to take on board as we push the club forward.

“We’ve got such a young squad and talent coming through. We need to get to the mentality right in the seniors.

“One of the big bits for me was they started celebrating like footballers, for me that’s no-no, we need to keep trying to perform as the jobs not done, that attitude is not acceptable.”
